Review: A Trip to Dada Land - Dada Life's Free Album Release Party at the Avalon

You know it’s going to be a good week when you wake up Monday morning to a fantastic surprise. I just happen to check my spam folder this Monday to find a flyer promoting Dada Life’s Release party for their "Rules of Dada" album, being held at the Avalon Tuesday night. Cover price: Free… if I snagged a ticket when they became available. I knew I was meant to go to the show after that when I started my car and “Feed the Dada” was playing on the radio. I waited patiently at work, and at 10am, after a few refreshes, I was able to jump on to the site, grab a ticket, and begin to let the excitement build for the following night!

I had read before about Dada life’s last show at the Avalon in 2010, when a riot broke out after the club was shut down, so I had no idea what to expect for the night. We decided to arrive right when doors opened and were greeted to a decent line, but nothing nearly as bad as I had seen a few nights earlier when we saw Zedd and Porter Robinson. Our tickets granted a plus one, and because we could only find an odd number of people to go with, I happened to have an extra ticket. Some people were trying to sell there’s, which I find ridiculous because it’s a free show, so when someone asked if anyone had an extra ticket, I gave them mine for nothing so the joy could be spread (I hope you enjoyed the show!).

I have to say, Dada Life puts on an incredible show with so much fan fare! From the moment the stepped onto the stage, large inflatable bananas and champagne bottles spilled out over the audience. Their crazy cartoon graphics played behind them the whole time. They touted “Happy Violence” by giving out pillows so a giant pillow fight erupted. They also increased the joy by giving away masks that had the most ridiculous smiles printed on them. I remember at one point I was dancing with a girl and she just turned and pointed and a MASSIVE inflatable banana had appeared above the crowd, it’s delicious potassium bouncing over everyone.

They played an amazing set as well. Starting and ending the “Kick out the Epic Motherfu**er” was an amazing way to build up the energy and to close out with a bang. Remixes of Kaskade’s “Llove” and Duck Sauce’s “Big Bad Wolf” soon followed. They blasted most of the songs from their new album (as to be expected from an Album release party) including “Feed the Dada,” “Boing Clash Boom,” and “So Young So High.” They also treated the crowd to something special when they unleashed their remix of “Gangnam Style” while showing “Oppa Dada Style” in their visuals.

I never thought at this point in my life I would be going out to EDM shows on Tuesday nights, but I have to say, I’m so glad I am. These past two years have been amazing and I am having so much fun. Dada Life blew my mind last night with a trip to Dada Land and I can’t wait to go back!
